Seeking guidance on cloud?

Building your business on cloud services requires knowledge and experience. Common challenges are: how do cloud services fit with the application portfolio and enterprise strategy? What are the financial gains of using cloud services? Is data secure in the cloud? Does legislation put requirements on the use of cloud services?

Milliplex is a company all about cloud services. We provide a broad range of cloud advisory services to companies and governments. We use a methodology based approach where a number of key criteria are scored in a cloud service evaluation model (CSEM). The output result serves as basis for making the transition into the cloud. By using our services you will improve your business, lower your operational cost, secure your data, and increase customer satisfaction.

Application Portfolio Analysis

Does cloud fit with the application portfolio and long term enterprise strategy?
We use a methodology based approach where a number of key criteria are scored in a cloud service evaluation model (CSEM). In the application portfolio analysis the following aspects are analyzed:

  • Enterprise strategy: alignment of cloud service to long term strategy
  • Business Criticality: if the application is core business it may potentially not be a good candidate for the cloud
  • Master Data: The management of master data and the information architecture influence the use of cloud.
  • Information Security: Requirements on information security and confidentiality defines what kind of data can be stored in the cloud.
  • Data integration and interfaces: The data integration and interface capabilities may limit the use of a cloud service.
  • Performance and scalability: Non functional requirements on scalability, performance, and availability are key considerations when moving to the cloud.

The output of a portfolio analysis is a ranking score providing guidance on how well a cloud service fits with the application portfolio and enterprise strategy.

Return on Investment

Will investment in cloud pay off? What is the total cost of ownership?
We use a methodology based approach where a number of key criteria are scored in a cloud service evaluation model (CSEM). We also rely on standard calculation models for licensing and TCO. In the Return on Investment analysis the following aspects are considered:

  • Current cost of ownership: the actual cost of ownership for in house applications includes cost of infrastructure (hw, network, os, db), cost of application development and maintenance, and cost of staff, office, and datacenter
  • Cloud license models: different typs of models are used which factor usage and users differently
  • Cost of transition: Cost of a transition project, decommissioning, and new license model.
  • Total cost of ownership: Takes into account all direct and indirect cost components and provides a cost projection for the first 5 years of ownership.

The output of an ROI analysis is a business case quantifying the return and ROI, a TCO graph showing cash flows per year and a ranking score providing guidance on how well a transition into cloud pays off.

Compliance

Is data secure in the cloud? Does legislation put requirements on the use of cloud services?
We use a methodology based approach where a number of key criteria are scored in a cloud service evaluation model (CSEM). In the compliance review the following aspects are analyzed:

  • Data Privacy:Depending on the applicable Data Privacy Act(s) different requirements apply to the use of personal data in a cloud service
  • Location of cloud: It may sound like a contradiction in terms but a cloud service is in general specified as executing at a physical location (data center). Depending on the geographical location regulatory requirements such as the EU model clauses may apply.
  • Regulatory requirements: Certain industries such as Banks and financial institutions operate under regulatory frameworks which may pose additional requirements on the use of cloud.

The output of a compliance review is a ranking score providing guidance on how well a cloud service is compliant with legislation and frameworks.

Procurement

Which criterias are important for selecting a cloud supplier? What shall be specified in the contract?
We use a methodology based approach where we research the market based on business and IT requirements to create a list of candidate suppliers. We engage the suppliers either in a direct dialog or optionally in an RFP process. For each supplier on the short list we gauge the suppliers on a number of key cloud criteria to create a rank for each supplier.

  • Business and IT specifications: the requirement specifications serve as basis for delivery
  • List of suppliers: list of potential candidate suppliers based on market research and market analytics such as Gartner
  • Supplier evaluation: Requirement fulfillment (business, IT, security), cloud service fulfillment and compliance.
  • Contracting: Cloud contracting, pricing, and negotiations

The output of a Cloud Procurement is a selection of a cloud supplier based on ranking of key cloud critera and a signed contract.

Transition

How shall Business and IT transition into the cloud?
We use an agile best practice delivery approach with frequent deliveries and business demos to create business value and reduce risk. We handle all interactions with the supplier and facilitate detailing of requirements with the business as well as managing scope discussions.

  • Agile Delivery: Agile delivery method with frequent business demos to demonstrate progress and reduce risk
  • Supplier management: Scope management, delivery coordination, decisioning on what is best delivered out of the box vs bespoke
  • Data migration: Migration of data into the cloud. Definition of data exports from cloud
  • Business transformation: Rollout in business, and business governance including super users and administration

The output of a transition is a live cloud service providing value to the business and customers.

Governance

What is the policy for using the cloud? How shall IT coordinate cloud initiatives?
We use a methodology based approach where we evaluate different strategies for managing the cloud.

  • Cloud policy: Which criterias determine a move to the cloud? How shall business coordinate with IT to prevent misalignmnent between different cloud services?
  • Cloud aquisition: Processes for cloud aquisitions aligned to IT governance, security, and architecture
  • Cloud fulfillment: Processes for followup on cloud service delivery and service level agreement.
  • Cloud exit: How shall exit from the cloud service be done? What are the requirements on data export and migrstion?

The output of Cloud Governance is a set of rules and processes for management and followup on the use of cloud services.
